Ted Kennedy, the senator from Massachusetts for way – too long, was driving drunk and erratically on Chappaquiddick Island, a small island off Martha’s Vineyard, when he drove off a bridge, flipping the car and drowning Mary Jo Kopechne in 1969. Since he was married, Kennedy didn’t stick around to help his companion, leaving her to die in shallow water.
